Strong, breathable and built for easy Varroa monitoring – this National screened hive base is the foundation your bees deserve.

Made from knot-free New Zealand Pine and fully assembled right here at BEEtastic HQ, this British National screened base includes a removable Varroa monitoring tray and a wooden entrance reducer – so you’re ready to go from day one.

Why choose a screened base? It improves ventilation, helps regulate humidity in the hive, and provides an effective way to monitor and manage Varroa mite levels without disturbing the colony. The base also helps reduce chalkbrood and other moisture-related issues common in traditional solid floors.

Why we choose New Zealand Pine over other woods:

  • New Zealand Pine is knot-free, stable and easy to treat – ideal for long-lasting hive parts
  • Chinese Pine often contains excessive knots and sap, leading to sticky joins and cracking
  • UK Fir can be brittle and knotty, making it prone to splitting or warping
  • Farmed Cedar is lightweight but soft, often denting or deforming unless well-maintained

Key Features:

  • Compatible with all British National hives
  • Knot-free New Zealand Pine – sustainable and durable
  • Includes removable Varroa tray for effective mite monitoring
  • Includes entrance reducer – great for smaller colonies or cold weather
  • Fully assembled – no tools or flat-pack headaches

Like any hive equipment, we recommend treating with preserve or paint to maximise the working life. Once treated, New Zealand Pine beats many of the characteristics of British Red Cedar (which is typically fast-grown and felled young making it softer and less durable).
